"In obedience to a joint resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives, of February 1st, 1837, 'that the Board of Public Works be instructed to prepare, or cause to be prepared, on such scale as may be best suited to the purpose, two Skeleton Maps of the State of Ohio, for the use of the Legislature; upon which shall be designated the counties, principal towns, and cities; chief water courses; Canals, Side Cuts, Railroads, and Turnpike roads, that may be authorized by law, noting the estimated length of each, and accompanying the same with a list of resolutions for new surveys, and the acts in relation to each unfinished work respectively, the date of its passage, the volume and page where found, and a remark whether a public work, or private incorporation,' the Board report: That Samuel R. Curtis, Esq., an Engineer in the employment of the Board, and having charge of the Muskingum improvement, was employed by the Board to perform the duties required in the foregoing resolution. The maps and notes having been prepared, are herewith respectfully submitted."--Letter of transmittal.
