Summary
Contains Superintendent Francis H. Smith's report of his return to Lexington in December 1861 to reopen the Virginia Military Institute following the commencement of the Civil War, and of his efforts to recruit a faculty and obtain uniforms and supplies for the cadets. Also includes a report of the death of Brigadier General Philip St. George Cocke, and a roster of the cadets enrolled in January 1862.
