Abstract

Part of a special issue on group-conflict resolution. A commentary on several articles in this issue that explore challenges to the ability of communities to reconcile in the aftermath of mass violence. The writer draws from earlier work on transitional justice to explore how assumptions regarding justice have resulted in the launch of a new international consensus on essential processes of rebuilding societies. She discusses some drawbacks of this approach and offers some suggestions for new directions for the domain of transitional justice.
