Abstract

New technologies are upending the organization of work in America. Soon, nearly half the working population will be laboring casually and precariously as a result of evolving business models. This panel will consider whether and how legal categories and regulations are failing to create stable and secure work environments in this new economy. The panel will consider questions such as how workers for companies like Uber, Taskrabbit, and Amazon Prime should be classified as a legal matter, and what such classifications mean for their access to worker protections and social safety nets. In addition, the panel will consider whether existing legal frameworks effectively capture the relationships between workers and employers in the modern workplace.
