Abstract
For decades, traditional labor unions have failed to organize tech workers, ranging from those that toiled in semi-conductor factories during the early days of Silicon Valley, to today's highly skilled software engineers at various social media companies. More recently, the new tech economy has created an emerging class of workers that some argue are neither statutory employees nor independent contractors, while other workers in this new tech economy are plainly performing service-sector jobs that have traditionally been unionized. How are labor unions addressing these changes? Are there other non-traditional organizing strategies that will be more effective in representing the interests of these workers?
