Shareholder rights plans or poison pills continued to be the subject of action in the corporate arena. Although the number of new pills declined from past years, public companies, shareholders, and corporate research firms continued to focus on the positive and negative aspects of such anti-takeover devices. As long as poison pills continue to be used as an anti-takeover defense, they will continue to be the topic of discussion in the corporate arena. Public companies, shareholders and institutional investors will continue to debate their usefulness and effectiveness.
