Summary
Manuscript collection prefaced by list of the 31 documents with the following annotation: "The following documents nos 1-to-31, inclusive, are part of the papers and correspondence of the late General Daniel Bissell, sometime commander of the United States Military Department which comprised the Territory of Missouri. They are interesting, in that they relate to the troubles and dangers of the early settlers of the Mississippi Valley - and because several are autographs of persons who are distinguished in the history of the country. They were donated to the St. Louis Mercantile Library Association by Mr. Sextus Shearer, Jr. and were received in the year 1856."
Note
Included in these 31 entries are correspondence of William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, and of Zebulon M. Pike.
