The Sacra Congregatio Cardinalium Concilii Tridentini interpretum was established by Pope Pius IV in 1564 to oversee the interpretation and application of the canons issued by the Council of Trent. Its powers and responsibilities were expanded under Gregory XIII and Sixtus V to include revising provincial councils' acts of provincial councils and promoting Tridentine reforms generally. Over time, many of its responsibilities were absorbed by other Congregations, and the Congregatio pro Conciliis came to oversee primarily the disciplining of secular clergy. It was given its current name, Congregatio pro Clericis, in 1967. Giacomo Lanfredini was made secretary of the Council in July 1730.
