Summary
"Your Honorable bodies are well aware, that the University is at present anxiously awaiting your decision upon its application for the remission of a debt, which it owes to the State. Various considerations had been brought before you to induce a favorable action. The undersigned Professors would only add, as their perfectly united and harmonious opinion, that the remission of said debt is at the present juncture of vital moment to the best interests of the University. Without it, we shall be brought to a pause in the improvements we have entered upon and which have been received with such favor by the country at large. ... We feel therefore that we are simply in the discharge of our duty to the Institution and to the State to which it belongs, to make known our convictions and to ask most respectfully that your honorable bodies would grant a decision, which we are assured would soon show its fruits in our increased usefulness and efficiency, and might be the beginning of the realization of an expectation early cherished by the founders of the University ... that the University of Michigan should take the first rank among the Literary Institutions of our country."--Page 4.
Note
The document is addressed to the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan, and is signed by Henry P. Tappan, Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, and sixteen others.
