House doc. (Michigan. Legislature. House of Representatives) ; 1857, no. 2.
Summary
Request to the Legislature of Michigan from inhabitants of Jackson County about swamp lands in Michigan that were donated by the United States government. The petitioners note that the lands are good agricultural lands, and that all in the state should benefit equally from the disposition of the lands. The petition concludes, "after reviewing the whole subject, your memorialists are unable to discover any disposition that can be made of the proceeds of the Swamp lands, so just in itself, and of such universal benefit as to appropriate them exclusively to the support of common schools, and pray that your Honorable body will make such disposition of them and none other." (Page 2). They oppose the use of funds for a universal system of education (beyond the commons schools) and railroads. The document includes the names of more than sixty signatories, beginning with W.T. Howell. The document includes a statement from the Jackson County Board of Supervisors with a resolution to use the swamp land funds for common schools.
