Summary
Petition from the First Presbyterian Church to the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives about an alleged project of the Roman Catholic priests in the state to subvert the free system of schools by supporting a division of school funds. The petition concludes, "whatever imaginary advantages might flow from such a division of our public moneys, we are quite willing to forego them, for the immensely higher advantage of maintaining our excellent school system as it is, and frowning upon any attempt, come from whatever quarter it may to force the power and patronage of the State into any alliance with sectarian opinion. Your memorialists, therefore, respectfully remonstrate against the adoption of the scheme now pressed upon your attention by the Romish priests, or any scheme which shall lead to a similar result." (Page 3). The petition is dated January 27, 1853, and is signed by E.P. Hastings and six others.
