Summary
Report of the Michigan Senate Committee on Insane Asylum. Committee members visited the asylum at Kalamazoo with a committee from the House of Representatives. The report includes information on buildings, persons with mental illnesses, the purposes of the asylums (cure, confinement, provision of a home), and current confinement in jails and poor-houses. The report concludes, "Believing that the insane have claims that ought not to be neglected, and that is it the common sentiment of all who are acquainted with their unhappy and miserable condition that the asylum should be completed at the earliest possible period, your committee would recommend that the sum of $45,000 be appropriated for that purpose for the year 1861, and a like sum for the year 1862." The report is signed by N. Webb, Chairman.
