Beginning of report: "To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled. The undersigned, in compliance with the provisions of an Order of the 28th of August, 1849, submitting 'An act to authorize the business of Banking,' to the Bank Commissioners, and directing them 'carefully to examine the same and make report to the next Legislature, with such suggestions and alterations as they shall deem for the public interest,' respectfully ask leave to submit the following report." (Page [3]).
A letter of transmittal is dated Jan. 16, 1852, and is signed by John Hodgdon and Moses Sherburne, Bank Commissioners. It is addressed to G.P. Sewall, Speaker of the House of Representatives. The report includes discussion of banking in Maine, the United States, New York, and other places, on the topics of securities, species, paper currency, the safety of banks, free banks, bank notes, and banking operations.
