Note
Report of the Maine House Committee on Mercantile Affairs and Insurance, and resolves entitled "A resolve for the representation of Maine at the Paris Exposition in 1855." The report notes that the Exposition of Arts and Industry of all Nations, to be held in Paris in 1855, will provide an opportunity to show industrial products, resources, and occupations from Maine, and the resolution proposes appointing a commissioner or commissioners to prepare and transmit material. The report and resolves are followed by an excerpt from a memorial of a committee of the citizens of Portland. The committee suggests articles to be exhibited should be organized in three sections: raw materials, machinery and mechanical inventions, and manufactures. Lists of articles that could be included in each category are included. The committee excerpt is signed by James B. Cahoon, Mayor of Portland, and 44 others.
