Note
Maine House document with two amendments, one of which is proposed by Mr. Bradbury of Hollis, and the other by Mr. Stevens of Augusta. Both amendments indicate support for President Andrew Johnson. The first amendment indicates that "as representatives of the State of Maine we pledge to president Johnson the full cooperation of her people in the advancement of his sagacious, humane and just policy for the speedy restoration of the citizens of the late insurrectionary states to the enjoyment and exercise of all their rights and privileges under the constitution." (Page 1-2). The original bill, "Resolves in relation to equality of civil and political rights," was on the topic of suffrage for African Americans.
