Summary
1866 remonstrance of J.W. Veazie to the Maine Legislature against the petition of the Penobscot Mill-Dam Company. Veazie reminded the legislators that the dam was first authorized in 1828. When the company failed in the mid-1830s, Veazie bought it and had owned the property for the past thirty years. Someone claimed the company name and wanted to build a dam below the present one. That would flood his property and property in Orono. He was willing to sell. Better yet, he noted that a commission could manage all the water power on the Penobscot for the benefit of all the communities on the river.
