Summary
On February 20, 1866, the Adjutant General reported on the bounties paid by various jurisdictions to the soldiers sent to war. The tables were arranged alphabetically by county and each town therein responded to a list of questions about the categories of volunteers, drafted men, and substitutes. Nearly every county spent hundreds of thousands of dollars--Cumberland and York counties spent over a million dollars each. The grand total, up to the date of the report, was $9,671,778.
