Historical Data
The Cancellaria Apostolica, or Apostolic Chancery, dates to the early Middle Ages when notaries were appointed to draw up documents for the papacy. The office changed shape repeatedly over the centuries. By the seventeenth century, it prepared and sent the papal bulls and letters with the pope's lead seal and collected taxes owed for these bulls' issuance. The office was abolished in 1973.
