Summary
Manuscript regarding the foundation of the order of the Ordo Beatae Mariae de Mercede redemptionis captivorum (Our Lady of Mercy of the Redemption of the Captives), a royal and military order established in 1218 by St. Peter Nolasco in Barcelona, Spain, for the redemption of Christian captives. Contains the history of the order ("Speculum ordinis") and its Constitutiones. This manuscript also contains the Regula beati Augustini and the Expositio in Regulam beati Augustini, sometimes attributed to Hugh of St. Victor. Fol. 133v and 134v include the professions of Didacus de Lebrixa (1 March 1529), Andreas de Torquemada (5 May, no year specified), and Johannes de Vaena (15 October 1513). . Ownership
The manuscript remained at the convent of the Order of Merced until at least 1699 and possibly later, according to notes on fol. ir in Spanish regarding the history of the manuscript in two different hands; the latter includes a date of 1699. At one time the manuscript was part of the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps, his no. 3071.
Binding Information
Bound in brown leather over wooden boards, bearing stamps and fillets; the two original fore edge clasps are lacking. Title on spine: "Statuta redemptionis captivorum de Barchinone."
