Originally presented as the author's thesis (doctoral)--Utrecht University, 2006. This book is primarily concerned with the competences of the United Nations in the field of human rights. Its focus is on the practice of the Commission on Human Rights' Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances; additionally, the practice of the Special Rapporteur on Torture and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention are taken into account. Practice, events and incidents relating to other thematic procedures are referred to in the context of this study, if they had consequences or effects for the status and evolution of thematic procedures as a whole.
