Summary
This manuscript is a compilation of Raymond of Peñafort's Summa de poenitentia; and exceprts from the work of Augustine of Hippo, including the Confessiones, De diversis quaestionibus, De doctrina christiana, De agone christiano, and several sermons; excerpts from three other sermons; excerpts from Augustine's De quanitate animae; and excerpts from Prosper Aquitanus's Liber sententiarum. It represents the work of several scribes over a period of time. There are also notes and additions in the margins, some of these by a later hand (possibly mid 14th century). Annotations and inscriptions throughout, including "Dartmouth the Kingdom of England" on fol. 65v; "Lawier quod amor vincit omnia" on fol. 90v (in a later script imitating early Gothic bookhand); "This indenture III made this 3d day" on fol. 100r; "This indenture made on the third day of March one thousand seven hundred and fifty seven and in the thirty seven years of the reign of our Sovering [sic] lord King George fra[.] and J.W." on fol. 150v. On fol. 151r a former owner composed a 4-line poem: "A fu darfu ei derfyn / A fydo adderfyddo ddyn / Rhaid i beran anrhydedu / Myn fy ngrhed fyned i bed." Its small format, and the fact that it looks heavily used, suggests that it could have been written for the daily use of priests. Although the modern foliation is wrong, the manuscript could not be refoliated, due to the extreme fragility and ubiquitous mold spots.
