This manuscript is an incomplete copy of Hostiensis's Summa aurea. The first part of the Prohemium (originally on folios prior to fol. 1) is missing; the first paragraph in liber secundus on fol. 81 was cut out, and due to excisions between fol. 204 and fol. 205, large portions towards the end of Liber tertius and the beginning of Liber quartus are gone; larger illuminations have been cut out during rebinding. Quires 14-18 bound out of order with a quire wanting before quire 15, should be 14, 17, [wanting], 15, 16, 18, 19; first quire and quire between 30 and 31 wanting.

Layout: Written in two columns of 68 lines; below top-line; frame-ruled in lead; prickings visible in the upper and lower margin.
Script: Written in a littera rotunda.
Decoration: Distinctly French illuminated initials mostly on 3 or 4 lines, painted in gold, pink, light blue and white: they show human heads, animal heads and varous grotesques. Alternating red and blue paragraph marks, on two lines. Alternating red and blue paragraph marks on one line throughout. Red rubrics; running titles which alternate blue and red letters. A number of illuminations, particularly the larger initials, have been excised with repairs made in modern vellum.
Origin: Likely written in southern France during the first quarter of the 14th century based on paleographical evidence and illuminations.

Provenance: Formerly in the collections of Cardinal Juan de Torquemada who likely acquried it after 1439, possibly in Rome (his ex libris is on fol. 338r: "Iste liber pertinet domino Cardinali Sancti Sixti;" a different, modern hand has used pencil to mis-transcribe this text as "liber pertinet domino Cypriali Sancte"); possibly the monastery S. Pablo in Valladolid at his bequest; Arthur Charles Wellesley, the fourth Duke of Wellington, who acquired it in Spain in 1906 and subsequently sold by him at Sotheby's (see note on front pastedown: "Purchased by the Duke of Wellington in Spain about 1906, sold by him at Sotheby's"); and Robert Strouse of Napa Valley, California.

Bound in thick wooden boards, originally bearing little stamps and fillets, rebound and restored, possibly in the 19th century; upper boards completely re-covered lower boards partially recovered; lower cover has metal bosses, edge pieces, and hardware for clasps (now missing); spine in poor condition.
