Preliminary leaves, except pi3 and 4pi3, consist of full-page engravings, mostly cameo portraits of the masters general, four to a leaf. The printed leaves contain a brief of Pope Sixtus V, introduction by the Master General Hughes Loubenx de Verdalle, and table of contents. The 20 engravings accompanying the text (beginning with 4pi4), also full-page, are surrounded by woodcut borders.
Preliminaries differ from Brigham Young copy and both variations shown in Adams.
