Collection of material concerning the accreditation of the University of California School of Law (Boalt Hall) by the Association of American Law Schools in 1989. Accreditation was granted, but the AALS Executive Board raised questions about the school's commitment to hiring, promoting, or retaining a diverse faculty, including women and members of minority groups. An article by Paul Carrington titled “Accreditation and the AALS: the Boalt Affair” drew attention to the situation. The collection includes a copy of the 1989 Self-Study prepared by the law school, a draft of Carrington's article as well as the published version, and correspondence between AALS committee members and Boalt Hall faculty, especially Dean Jesse Choper and Herma Hill Kay. The file was compiled by Herma Hill Kay.
