Description

Summary
Plea bill coming before the Master of the Rolls in the person of the Counsel in a case involving Dame Isabelle Carr, plaintiff, and George and Anne Evans, William Tipping, Samuel Stillingfleet, Robert and Anne Knapton, Samuel and Jane Smith, Thomas Durnford, William Knapton, and John Willis. Evans had entered into articles of agreement with Carr about assigning lands in Durham, in Hulam, Sheraton, and Monk Hesleden to her in fee simple and free from encumberances. Carr had discovered that Geroge Evans' mother Anne had already leased that property to Tipping, Stillingfleet, Thomas Hoby, and William Knapton for a term of 500 years [?] to pay her late husband's debts and provide for her four daughters, Jane Smits, Anne Knapton, and Elizabeth and Mary Evans. An agreement is reached for an alternate estate and the Master of the Rolls imposes costs. This may be the same George Evans in MS doc. 81 (whose mother is Anne Evans and who has four sisters) and MS doc. 80. Wear and damage along creases; holes and soiling on final leaf. Two embossed, 6 pence stamps at top of document.
