Historical Data
Miguel de Molinos, born in 1640 in Muniesa Spain, was a Spanish priest and a friend of Pope Innocent XI, condemned for heresy in 1687. He studied with the Jesuits in Valencia, was ordained in 1652, and took a doctorate shortly thereafter. He went to Rome in 1663 as procurator in the beatification of Jerónimo Simón, and remained there. In 1675, his Guida spirituale, which taught that perfection is to be achieved through contemplation, was published with imprimatur of the pope's theologian and the approval of various orders. The Guida spirituale, printed in 10 editions, and translated into Latin, French, Dutch, English, and German. Molinos became quite influential: corresponding with Princess Borghese, visiting Christina, Queen of Sweden, and becoming friends with Cardinal Odescalchi, who would be elected Pope Innocent XI in 1676. Disquiet about his teachings, termed Quietism, began stirring in the 1680s. Molinos was arrested for heresy in 1685 and brought before the Inquisition in 1687, then sentenced to prison and penitential garb on September 2, 1687. On the following day, he made a public profession at the Dominican church of S. Maria sopra Minerva. Innocent XI confirmed Molinos's and his Guida's condemnation in a bull issued in November. Molinos died in Rome, in prison, in 1696.
Alderano Cibo, born in 1613, was a cardinal and head of the Roman Inquisition. The son of Carol I Cibo, the prince of Massa and duke of Carrar, and Brigida Spinola, of Calice and Castellaro, and a relative of Pope Innocent VIII, Cibo went to Rome during the papacy of Urban VIII (1623-1644), were he became papal majordomo in 1644. He was created a cardinal in 1645, served as legate to Urbino, Romandiola, Ferrera, and Avignon, and also superintendent-general of the Papal States. As cardinal, Cibo participated in the papal conclaves of 1655, 1667, 1669-1670 and 1676. He was elected bishop of Iesi in 1656, a position he held until 1671. He was the papacy's Secretary of State from 1676 to 1689, Secretary of the Roman Inquisition from 1683-1700, and Vice-dean of the College of Cardinals in 1687. Cibo died in Rome in 1700.
